    Unhurried Enough to Resist Temptation

    Unhurried Enough to Resist Temptation

    Passage: Luke 4:1-13

    Speaker: Rev. Jennifer Eschliman, Pastor

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. Luke 4:1-2

    Welcome

Call to Worship (from Psalm 33:20-22)
    Brothers and sisters, come,
let us seek the Lord together:
    Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
Come, let us seek the Lord together,
and learn to walk in his ways.

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You

I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Day into night, You can turn the dark into light
You can take a soul that was lost and turn it around
Lord on my own, my heart can turn as hard as a stone
But You can make it tender again with Your love

Stir up a hunger, stir up a hunger in my heart
Nothing will satisfy me, nothing else will do
Stir up a hunger, a hunger in my heart
Stir up a hunger in my heart for more of You

    Opening Prayer (unison)
Lord Jesus, through your cross and resurrection you brought us salvation, and through your gracious life, you revealed God’s perfect intentions for our own lives. Stir up in us a desire to keep in step with you, so that we might learn to resist the world’s temptations and instead walk with you in the way that leads to life abundant. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.
    Proclamation and Response

    Scripture Reading: Luke 4:1-13

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” 4 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”

5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered him, “It is written,
    ‘Worship the Lord your God,
        and serve only him.’”

9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
‘He will command his angels concerning you,
        to protect you,’
    11 and
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’”

12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Leader: This is the Word of God.
    All: Thanks be to God!

          Prayers of the People
          The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
                hallowed be thy name.
                Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
           And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
                but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
          forever. Amen.
