Who Do You Say That I Am?

Who Do You Say That I Am?

    Passage: Matthew 16:13-16

    Speaker: Rev. Vivian McCarthy, Pastor

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.

    Call to Worship

Jesus asks, “Who do people say that I am?”
Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.
What about you?  Who do you say that I am?

Hymn Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know   (UMH # 163)
    Adam O'Dell, leading  ~Schwedler, Kennedy

Ask ye what great thing I know that delights and stirs me so?
What the high reward I win?  Whose the name I glory in?
    Jesus Christ, the Crucified.

Who defeats my fiercest foes?  Who consoles my saddest woes?
Who revives my waiting heart, healing all its hidden smart?
    Jesus Christ, the Crucified.

Who is life in life to me?  Who the death of death will be?
Who will place me on His right with the countless hosts of light?
    Jesus Christ, the Crucified.

This is that great thing I know; this delights and stirs me so:
faith in Him who died to save, Him who triumphed o'er the grave,
    Jesus Christ, the Crucified.

    Unison Prayer

    Pastor Barbara Parnell, leading

What a beautiful Sunday morning, a great day to offer praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord Christ.  You alone fill our hearts with gratitude at the thought of your sacrifice, love and grace.  You alone lift our spirits from the depths of despair.  You alone satisfy our hungers.  You alone provide strength for the journey.  You alone are worthy of our praise.  You are our joy and our song.  We praise you.  We bless you.  We glorify you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

    Proclamation and Response

Scriptures Matthew 16:13-16 (CEB)  Pastor Barbara Reading

13 Now when Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 [The disciples] replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
15 Jesus said, “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

    Men

1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

    Women

3 Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.

    Men

4-6 In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.

    Women

9-10 Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

    Men

11-13 Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.

    Women

14-16 Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.

    Men

17-19 Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” says God. “I’ll take care of it.”

    Women

20-21 Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.

This is the word of the Lord.
    Thanks be to God.

    Song Who Am I?
Phil and Darlene Leading ~Casting Crowns (CCLI License #101999)

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth would care to know my name,
Would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star would choose to light the way, for my ever wandering heart?

Not because of who I am, but because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done, but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow,
a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind.
Still You hear me when I'm calling.  Lord, You catch me when I'm falling.
And You've told me who I am:  I am Yours, I am Yours.

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin would look on me with love
    and watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
would call out through the rain, and calm the storm in me?

Not because of who I am, but because of what You've done.
Not because of what I've done, but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow,
a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind.
Still You hear me when I'm calling.  Lord, You catch me when I'm falling.
And You've told me who I am:  I am Yours, I am Yours.
