From the Pastor

2015-09-16 Mid-Week Message

Dear Friends.

The last two days I just couldn't help myself.  More than one "Wow" escaped my lips when I stepped outside into the gorgeous weather!  I can't wait for the beauty of the leaves turning!  The wonder of God's creative beauty often stops me in my tracks, and I've been grateful this week for that little hint of fall in the air.

I hope you saw the special midweek yesterday about Cynthia Humphrey's mother's death on Sunday.  Mary Poso had a major stroke in church while she was showing her church family pictures of Rachel Humphrey's wedding (Mary's granddaughter) which was Sept 6.  Her viewing and funeral will be in Salisbury at her home church.  Details may be found on the Holloway Funeral Home website (http://www.hollowayfh.com/), and notes of sympathy may be sent to Cynthia Humphrey, 324 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136

This Sunday is Laity Sunday.  We will continue our series on our heritage as United Methodists, Saving Grace, with reflections on our General Rules, called Three Simple Rules.  Our lay leaders, George Hoffmann and Sue T. Wright have prepared the service for us and will be offering the reflections.

I hope you have considered participating in the upcoming round of Table for Eight fellowship evenings.  This opportunity for RUMC worshipers makes it possible to get to know people in the congregation at a deeper level than just "Hi, how are you - fine" that we often fall into, especially if we have not had an opportunity to participate in some of the more intimate RUMC activities.  The kick-off for the fall groups is this Sunday, Sept 20, at 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall.

Finally, there are a few special worship events that I want to be sure you have on your calendar if you want to be part of them:

  • Sunday, October 4, 5 pm - Blessing of the Pets - An annual favorite!  Bring your pets to receive a blessing, a treat, and a medallion for their collars in a brief, outdoor (weather-permitting) service on the front lawn of the church.  Invite your pet-loving friends!
  • Sunday, October 11, 9:45 am in the Northside Chapel - Remembering Our Babies - Inspired by a national observance for grieving parents, we will offer a brief prayer service for all parents who have lost children.  At the end of the service, parents will take home a candle to use during the national observance later that week, Wave of Light, when families are invited to light a candle at 7 pmon October 15 and leave it burning for 1 hour, joined by the light of their candles with families the world over who have lost a child or a pregnancy.  This is an opportunity to invite family, friends and neighbors to experience the love of Jesus in company with others who have had similar life experiences.

See you on Sunday!

Blessings on you!

This coming Sunday is Rally Day and we will begin a new worship series:  Saving Grace:  John Wesley and ____.  This week’s “and” is “Conversion.”  Brought up in a parsonage in 18th Century England, Wesley learned from early on that it is important to live our faith.  But his soul was deeply restless.  He begged a friend to help him figure out why he did not feel that he had faith.  Yes, you read that right.  John Wesley struggled with his faith.  He often thought he didn’t have enough faith – or maybe no faith at all.  On May 24, 1784, Wesley experienced a “conversion of the heart.”

Midweek Provocative Question:

When have you felt your heart “strangely warmed?”

This week we will commission and bless our Sunday School teachers and students and give a gift of a personal Bible to our third grader, Maya Trump!

See you on Sunday!

Blessings on you,
